STC’s Oleanna a “must see”
Is calling someone of the opposite sex “dear” or commenting
on someone’s appearance sexual harassment?
These are the questions David Mamet, author of the current
Sudbury Theatre Centre production of Oleanna has the audience
ask themselves.
Oleanna is Mamet’s commentary on the Anita
Hill versus Clarence Thomas trial in the U.S. Thomas, who was a nominee
for the Supreme Court, was brought to court by Hill amid allegations
of sexual improprieties.
Mamet’s scenario involves a student and a professor. The student
has approached the preoccupied teacher with her concerns about a failing
grade….
(Oleanna does) what good drama should do. It
affects its audience and provokes discussion. One leaves the theatre
asking questions about the social commentary just witness.
The STC’s production of Oleanna is superb.
From Jill Thompson’s wonderfully detailed, yet simple set, to
Rona Waddington’s well paced and constrained direction, to Jerry
Franken’s solid portrayal of the professor, to the masterful acting
tour-de-force of Stephanie Moore, who was exceptional as Carol, Oleanna
is a must see.
